New testament study of the word "faith" by Stella Paterson

This lengthy study is full of gems from the Word of God. It has been my joy to put it together for your benefit. I have thrilled once again, in typing out all the verses, as I was reminded of the truth of the reason Jesus died and rose again. Please read it through and allow the truth of the importance of faith and faithfulness to minister to your spirit.

May God bless you with ever-increasing faith in His Son and the finished work of the Cross.

Greek #3982

peithō (pi'-tho) A primary verb

Definition: “to convince (by argument, true or false); by analogy to pacify or conciliate (by other fair means); reflexively or passively to assent (to evidence or authority), to rely (by inward certainty)

Translated: “agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be (wax) content, make friend, obey, persuade, trust, yield”

- “agreed

Acts 5:40: “And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.”

- “assure

1 John 3:19: “Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him.”

- The word “believed” was used in the revised KJV. See bold words for its use in the older 1611 version.

Acts 17: (3&) 4: “Opening and alleging, that it behoved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom said he, I proclaim unto you, is the Christ. And some of them were persuaded, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.”

Acts 27:11: “But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul.”

Acts 28:24: “And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.”

- The words “have confidence” and “confident” were used in both the revised KJV and the older 1611 version.

- “made friend

Acts 12:20: “Now he was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: and they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, they asked for peace; because their country was fed from the king’s country.”

- The word “obey[ed]” was used in the revised KJV. See below for one exception in the older 1611 version.

Romans 2:8 (&9) : “But unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek:”

I refer you to an excellent article by Maurice Fuller.)

And he leaped up and walked. ...Confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that though many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God. ...And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all things that God had done with them, and how that he had opened a door of faith unto the Gentiles.”

Shall their want of faith make of none effect the faithfulness of God? ...Even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe: for there is no distinction: ...Whom God set forth to be a propitiation through faith by his blood, to shew his righteousness, because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God; ...Where then is the glorying? It is excluded. By what manner of law? Of works? Nay: but by a law of faith. We reckon therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. ...If so be that God is one, and he shall justify the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through faith. For we say To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness. ...And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision; that righteousness might be reckoned unto them: and the father of circumcision to them who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision. For not through the law was the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect: for the law worketh wrath: but where there is no law, neither is there transgression. For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, ...And without being weakened in faith, he considered his own body now as good as dead, he being about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb: yea, looking unto the promise of God he wavered not through unbelief; but waxed strong through faith, giving glory to God; and being fully assured that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”

For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; as it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence: and he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame.”

Romans 10:6-8, 17: “But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:) or, who shall descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; ...So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

Galatians 2:16, 20: “Yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, save through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. ...I have been crucified with Christ: yet I live; and yet no longer I, but Christ liveth in me: and that life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith which is in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.”

Galatians 3:2, 5, 7-9, 11-12, 14, 22-26: “This only would I learn from you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? ...He therefore that supplieth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? ...Know therefore that they which be of faith, the same are sons of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all the nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham. ...Now that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, The righteous shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, He that doeth them shall live in them. ...That upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. ...Howbeit the scripture hath shut up all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept in ward, under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. So that the law hath been our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith is come, we are no longer under a tutor. For ye are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
